Meningitis - underwriting life insurance



Meningitis is a life-threatening disease that can cause death in a short period of time. It is a condition where the inflammation of the protective membranes around spinal cord and the brain which may be caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, mircro-organisms and unusually by certain drugs. There are five types of meningitis: bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic.


Bacterial meningitis is the most common type of meningitis in Western countries. There are at least 50 different kinds of bacteria that can cause the disease and there are vary according to different age group. The majority of cases in the UK and Ireland are caused by meningococcal bacteria which can affect any age group but mainly affects, babies, toddlers and young people. 
 Patients will suffer with symptoms of both meningitis and septicaemia and this form meningococcal disease.

 Meningococcal disease tends to spread quicker in the winter. The symptoms include fever, headache, vomit, painful limbs and red rush. 
The meningococcal bacteria live naturally in the throat and nose. One tenth of us carry this type of bacteria for weeks and months and not even knowing about it. The reason why most of us will not suffer any harmful effects is because of natural resistance. The bacteria will not be able to survive outside human body. The germ is typically transferred from person to person through kissing, sneezing, but they cannot be passed on from items that was touched by the germ carrier such as cups and cutleries.

Viral Meningitis is fairly common and mostly occurs in children. It is more common during summer than winter and most cases the disease is recover quickly and only simple medication is needed to ease the symptoms. There are many different viruses that cause meningitis but the two main groups are enteroviruses and mumps and measles viruses.  Enteroviruses live in the lining of intestines and cause colds, sore throats and diarrhoea. Before the MMR vaccine is introduced, mumps was the most common cause of viral meningitis in the UK. 

Fungal Meningitis is caused by a fungal infection. Patients who are vulnerable to this type of meningitis are cancer patients, AIDS patients and other chronic illnesses patients such as diabetes where treatments and the disease compromise the patient’s immune system. This form of meningitis is not contagious their symptoms are similar to other types of meningitis; they are fever, headache, vomiting, seizures, stiff neck, drowsiness and dislike bright lights.

Parasitic Meningitis is a very rare form of parasitic meningitis can cause a fatal brain infection. The single-celled living organism called Naegleria fowleri enters the body through the nose. This happens when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places e.g. lakes and rivers. However, you will not be infected by drinking contaminated water.

The impact on life insurance underwriting

According to one of the largest life insurance provider, standard form of life insurance should be able to offer for both life and critical illness cover, providing a full recovery of the disease. Otherwise, the terms should be based on the intensity of the damage.
